Two people have been killed and a third wounded in a shooting at the University of Central Arkansas (UCA), police said today.
Lieutenant Rhonda Swindle, a spokeswoman for the university’s police force, said the shots were fired shortly after 9pm (1600 GMT) yesterday near a dormitory. She said she could not say whether the victims were students, but all three were male.
Swindle said the campus, in the city of Conway, would remain locked down today, with classes cancelled. She did not have any information about suspects, though the UCA police’s website said one person was in custody and three others were being sought.
Two black male students were killed Sunday night in a shooting on campus, by Arkansas and State halls.
One student died on scene, in the alley between Arkansas Hall and Snow Fine Arts Center, and the other student,18, was transported to Conway Regional Medical Center where he died hours later. A third victim, a nonstudent, was taken to the emergency room and later released, police spokeswoman Lt. Rhonda Swindle said.
Swindle said a UCA officer heard the shots on campus and two officers were on the scene within a minute. A 911 called was made at 9:22 p.m., and the fire and ambulance units arrived by 9:30 p.m.
Monday classes are canceled, and students are encouraged to stay in their dorms and apartments, as all residence halls are under lockdown, Swindle said. Campus will remain open for faculty and staff.
