Tanker Fire on New Jersey Turnpike
A gas tanker overturned on the New Jersey Turnpike on Thursday afternoon, setting off a fire in East Rutherford.
Flames and heavy smoke were visible along the western spur of Route 3. The truck flipped over around 3 p.m.
Firefighters and emergency crews were at the scene and the flames were brought under control about an hour later.
The driver of the tanker was reportedly taken to University Hospital but there was no word on his condition or that nature of his injuries.
The western spur of Route 3 was closed to traffic. There were delays of at least a half an hour heading into New York City.
Turnpike spokesman Joe Orlando said Exit 16W exiting and entering the Turnpike from Route 3 will be closed through the evening commute, with road repairs likely.
